Basic Guitar Chords for Beginners

If you are just starting to learn guitar, you should start with some basic scales and chords. The first chords you learn should be major chords in the simplest keys. I have made a page on Squidoo that has Youtube videos and tips on how to play each chord - Starting Guitar Chords.

If you find it helpful please let me know!

A bit more about chords - chords are essential for guitarists (and all musicians really) as they are the foundation of a song. Songs are a bit empty and bare without chords. There are plenty of simple songs you can play with very few chords.

Have you ever seen the 4-chord Parody Song?  Basically, it was a satire of how loads and loads of pop songs (the really popular ones) only use four chords and they mashed all the songs together. Very clever!

You can see it here!

Is It Easy to Learn Guitar?

It can be easy to learn guitar if you are willing to take the time, put in the effort and the money to employ a teacher or start a great guitar program.

That being said, it will take time and commitment to become good. It is simple enough to learn a few basic chords, but putting them all together and learning songs can be tricky.

The easiest way to become an accomplished guitarist is to get a private teacher. They can be expensive, but should be worth it in terms of value to your guitar learning experience. If you cannot afford a teacher, the next best option is an online guitar program with videos and lessons to follow. Often these are much cheaper than a teacher!

The Blues

I've been thinking about the Blues and how it all began. Like a lot of music, the Blues was pretty much weird and crazy and unlike anything people had heard before! Blues music has a few technical quirks - chords with flattened thirds, fifths or sevenths which were very different!

The influence of slavery is seen too in the lyrics and structure of the Blues songs. The songs have their roots in slave call and response. The subject matter was almost always sad or about work in the beginning, however that has changed.

Free Guitar Lessons

I have been checking out different free guitar lessons online. There is certainly a lot out there!

I particularly like the Jamorama site, you can find it here >>> Jamorama

The first six (free) lessons are perfect for beginners and really easy to follow. Perfect for anyone who is at a loss as to where to start. I think it is good to start with a method first - it will give you a logical progression in skills until you are ready to get out there and learn whatever takes your fancy!

Mothers Day Gifts with a Contemporary Twist!

This is completely not guitar-related. However, seeing as Mothers Day is fast approaching I thought I would link to this page.

My first article!

I've just published an article over at Ezine Articles titled: Is Learning Guitar Easy? It is a question that is always asked over and over again. I guess it is just human nature to want to avoid failure! You don't have to worry about failing though with guitar as you just keep practicing until you have mastered the technique that was giving you trouble.

The amount of time a student is willing to devote to the practice of guitar almost directly correlates to the ease in which they learn. The more time spent on developing skills and techniques, the better the end result. Of course, there are always some people who seem to naturally obtain these skills without much effort, however this usually balances out as there will be other things that they may not be as skilled with.

The best resource for learning guitar is a qualified guitar teacher who can meet with you in person for lessons. This can be an expensive option however, as a guitar teacher is a trained professional. A possible option for you if you live near a University/College/Conservatorium that teaches music is to contact the Administration and find out if there are any guitar music students who are interested in giving lessons. Music students are usually willing to teach for a much smaller fee than a full time music teacher and are quite qualified musicians if they have been accepted to tertiary-study in their instrument.

There are now many options to learn guitar online, though it sometimes seems as if there are too many to choose from! Make sure you do your research as while you might find some free offerings, others can be very expensive. Before paying for a course, check to see if they offer a free trial so that you can check the quality before you take that final step and pay up.

If you are ready to get serious with your guitar studies and take the next step, click through to my page Is it Easy to Learn Guitar to get started. On this page you will find a lot of helpful resources. I have included:
